Surfing is a great introduction into the world of water sports.
It builds your confidence in the water as well as improving your balance. It is also a huge amount of fun as you head into the water for your first lesson.
We at Explora Watersports offer surf lessons for beginners through to advanced surfers in Tarifa. We can help you feel like a king as you catch your first wave through to learning more advanced manoeuvres from extending your ride all the way down the wave, to your first cutbacks and top turns.
We are lucky in Tarifa that there are numerous surf spots along the huge stretch of coast, we will pick the right spot to suit your level and the conditions on the day. We run lessons every day from March through to the beginning of January.
The main spot for beginners is in front of our centre where the waves are slow and small which give you the time to learn the pop. We can then travel further down the coast to ‘The Bunker’ or El Palmar and Conil where there are numerous spots for all levels.

All of our instructors are fully certified, we ensure the lessons group size are small to ensure you get the most out of your time on the water. We have brand new equipment and wetsuits each year. Above all we believe that learning to surf should be fun. Our surf instructors are hugely experienced and will tailor the lessons to ensure you progress fast as well as have a lot of fun. Understanding the Surf Stages
Learn to surf the safe way
The first lesson is all about your balance and building your confidence in the water, understanding the right waves and the right point to catch the waves. Learning how to pop to your feet.
Focusing on your posture and stance as well as your feet position on the board, to keep you riding the wave for as long as possible. We then move to a smaller board.
Learn to build the momentum through your heels and toes to keep you powered on the wave for longer. Change and adapt your speed.
Learning to catch the wave just as it is about to break, catching the green wave. Riding the wave to the left or right and then begin to turn.
Surf Lessons Types
We run 3 types of lessons
A Group
Group Lessons in Tarifa are a minimum of 3 people or a family or friends group, each with your own surfboard and one instructor. You therefore get lots of 1:1 time with the instructor, it is also a more fun and sociable way to learn.
B Semi-Private
Semi private surf lessons in Tarifa will be just two of you with one instructor, this enables you to progress faster.
C Private
Private surf lesson in Tarifa means you get the 100% focus of the instructor as it is just you on the lesson, this enables you to fast track your progression.
Surf Rental & Storage
We also have surf boards of various sizes from soft boards through to shortboards and longboards for rental for those of you that already know how to surf or just want to give it a try on your own. We would recommend you taking a lesson if you haven’t surfed before as this way you will progress quicker and get more out of your time on the water, this however is up to you. If you want to bring your own gear you can also store it at our centre so close to the beach.

We are lucky that some of the best surf spots in Spain are located along the Costa de la Luz, so between Tarifa and Cadiz. The swell hits the coast through the winter from September through to April where the waves can reach 2 – 3m but you have waves all year for beginners to Intermediates surfers.
Tarifa
The spot in front of our centre is good for beginners, the waves are smaller and slower giving you the time to learn to pop to your feet and have some fun in the small waves.
El Balneario
Is next to Tarifa town, it is just before the Atlantic becomes the Mediterranean, this is a great spot for advanced beginners through to advanced surfers. You need to be careful of the rocks when the wind blows Levante.
The Bunker
From Tarifa this spot is just past the Hurricane Hotel, it is suited to more advanced surfers and is a reef break. To access the spot it is a 5 minutes walk from the car park to the spot.
Caños de Meca
Is a stunning spot, remote and natural, the spot is a reef break with long waves, so the perfect place as an intermediate surfer looking to extend their ride and start to play and learn how to ride the line.
El Palmar
El Palmar is 35 minutes drive from Tarifa and a great spot, where there are waves most days and the most consistent spot along the coast. The beach has numerous spots dotted along to suit all levels of surfer, to the right of El Palmar is a great spot for beginners where the waves are a bit smaller and break from the left or the right. The main beach in El Palmar the waves can reach 3m. We run surf trips here most days.
Conil
There are two spots in Conil, the first is at the river mouth, where you can have nice beginner waves, the beach is all sandy bottom. A good spot to learn to catch your first waves. Further along the beach there is a more advanced reef break spot just by the two rocks. Good at mid to high tide.
La Borrosa-Roche
This spot is past Conil towards Cadiz and is a great spot for beginners through to Intermediate Surfers. The spot can be busy in the summer but out of July and August it is well worth a visit and a surf.
